What types of eyelid lift are there?

In the case of an eyelid lift, it is possible to have the upper or lower eyelid tightened – sometimes a combination of both procedures is performed.

Depending on the desired result, either the upper or lower eyelid is tightened during blepharoplasty. Every now and then, a combination is also recommended in which the excess skin on both eyelids is removed.

The majority of eyelid lifts involve the correction of the so-called drooping eyelids. In this procedure, overhanging skin on the upper eyelids is surgically removed. Before the eyelid lift, the sickle-shaped incision is marked on the eyelid. This is placed in such a way that the scar later disappears into the natural upper eyelid crease. Naturally, more skin, fat and muscle tissue is removed from the outer upper eyelid crease than from the inner one. The local anesthesia makes the procedure painless. In the lower eyelid lift, excess skin on the lower eyelid is surgically removed. Compared to the upper eyelid lift, less skin has to be removed. Instead, the skin is “smoothed out”, which is why the removed piece of skin is also much smaller. The result is smoother skin under the eyes.

In order to professionally smooth the skin on the lower eyelid, the crescent-shaped drawing is made before the tightening. This runs just below the edge of the eyelid so that the scar is as inconspicuous as possible later on. Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) is a minor procedure with a great visual effect.
If the skin on the eyelid sags, the overall impression of the face can change considerably. The facial expressions seem tired and gloomy. In most cases, it is a natural aging process of the eye tissue. Sometimes it is also congenital. The upper eyelid is referred to as drooping eyelids, while the lower eyelid is referred to as bags under the eyes. During eyelid surgery for eyelid lifting, excess skin and fatty tissue is removed by the so-called blepharoplasty. The effect is enormous: a fresh facial expression that can also have a positive effect on the overall feeling.

Medical eyelid surgery for eyelid misalignments

Medical eyelid surgery is used for the misalignment of the eyelids. The lower eyelid is often affected. There can be an inward turn (“entropion“) or an outward turn (“ectropion“). Both eyelid misalignments can damage the eye and should therefore be corrected surgically. These eyelid misalignments can occur on one or both sides. A malposition of the upper eyelid is the drooping eyelid, the so-called “ptosis”. This can be congenital or develop in the course of life.

In the case of the “rolling eyelid“, there is an inward rotation of the (usually) lower eyelid, which can lead to grinding of the eyelashes on the cornea and conjunctiva with painful inflammation. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis and the health insurance covers the costs.

The lower eyelid is usually affected. The eyelid is turned outwards. In ectropion, the eyelid protrudes a bit from the eye and usually hangs downwards. Because a hailstone (chalazion) not only looks hideous, it also disturbs one’s own well-being and influences normal everyday life. The hailstone manifests itself as a nodular swelling that presses unpleasantly on the eye. A very pronounced hailstone even impairs vision. As a rule, a hailstone is treated with ointment and disappears on its own. If it is too large or stubbornly persists over a long period of time, surgical intervention to remove the hailstone is advisable.

For those who suffer from hailstones (chalazion) more often, we recommend daily eyelid rim hygiene in two steps as a preventive measure:

  1. Heat treatment:Gently warm the eyelid with a warm washcloth, warm compresses or special thermal glasses. The congested secretion in the meibomian glands will liquefy with heat and the pores will be easier to clean.
  2. Eyelid edge massage and eyelid cleansing:The liquid secretion is carefully massaged out (with a damp cotton swab). To do this, massage the upper eyelid 5 to 10 times from top to bottom, each time on the entire width of the eyelid. Then massage 5 to 10 times on the lower eyelid from bottom to top, also on the entire width of the eyelid. To finish, clean the edges of the eyelids with a damp cotton pad by stroking the eyelid from the outside to the inside. Use warm, previously boiled tap water or special care solutions.
