Special consultations with
ophthalmologists in Berlin

We will be happy to order contact lenses for you through our Sanoculus ophthalmology practice. If you do not yet know exactly which lenses and which strengths you need, we take a lot of time to adjust the contact lenses. You will quickly notice how comfortable it is to wear contact lenses and see without the limitations of glasses. We will train you to insert and remove the ordered contact lenses in a relaxed atmosphere and will be at your side until you have mastered the handling perfectly.

Contact lens types:
which one fits?

There are different types of contact lenses, which differ in their chemical composition , e.g. oxygen permeability and wettability, and thus determine the compatibility and quality of contact lens wearing.

The best-known lens is the soft contact lens, which is made of hydrogel or silicone hydrogel and is slightly larger than the cornea. This lens can be used to correct various refractive errors, such as corneal astigmatism (toric lenses) and presbyopia (multifocal lenses).

Dimensionally stable lenses are smaller and harder than soft contact lenses and “float” on the tear film. Here, too, different types of refractive errors can be corrected.

Other options in contact lens care are ortho-keratology lenses. These are also dimensionally stable lenses, but they sit on the eyes while sleeping. These lenses have a special geometry to flatten the cornea and thereby temporarily reduce myopia. The aim is to ensure that no glasses or contact lenses are needed for distance travel during the day.

Have contact lenses fitted by an ophthalmologist

In order to find the right lens for you and your lifestyle, a consultation, an examination of the anterior segment of the eye and a topography of your cornea are necessary.

During the fitting process, several appointments are necessary, during which we may order and examine several lenses and instruct you in handling and hygiene.

Frequently asked questions about contact lenses

  • Dimensionally stable (hard) contact lenses
  • Flexible (soft) contact lenses
  • Monofocal and multifocal lenses
  • Ortho-keratology lenses
  • Soft myopia contact lenses (especially for slowing down the progression of myopia in children)

Dimensionally stable contact lenses have been around since about 1950 and were made of oxygen-impermeable plexiglass (PMMA). Nowadays, lenses have a more modern design and have also become much more comfortable to wear. They are smaller than the cornea of the eye, consist of highly oxygen-permeable materials and “float” on the tear film, which enables an ideal oxygen supply to the cornea. Since the lenses do not need the tear film to remain stable, they are also very well tolerated in the long run. Depending on the corneal geometry and the refractive error of the eye, different lenses can be fitted to compensate for corneal astigmatism or presbyopia, for example. The acclimatization period may take a little longer than with soft contact lenses, for example, because the lenses can cause a foreign body sensation on the eye due to their stability.

The first soft contact lens came onto the market in 1971. At that time it was still made of hydrogel material, which allows almost no oxygen supply to the cornea, but today’s materials are almost all made of silicone hydrogel. This enables a high oxygen supply to the cornea through the lens, a longer wearing time of the contact lenses and better tolerability. Soft contact lenses are slightly larger in diameter than dimensionally stable lenses and offer a pleasant wearing comfort due to their flexibility. Depending on the type of refractive error, different lenses can also be fitted here.

Orthokeratological lenses (also known as night lenses or Ortho-K) are dimensionally stable lenses that are worn overnight. Due to their special geometry, they change the first layer of the cornea (the epithelium), so that no glasses are needed for distance during the day. The lenses are suitable for short-sighted people up to -6.00 dpt and astigmatism up to -1.5 dpt. In particular, these lenses are also used for myopia management in children to slow down the progression of myopia.
